Queen of the Moorlands- Roger Warrilow

Don't let down my dear old town
I have lived here for so long i am part of a crown
Give me your word , that words will be heard to conserve me.
I am the big full stop at the end of Derby St
A town centre key.
\I am the garden in the round easily to be found

I have the signs of the destination where you are bound.
The sun shines on me as it does the moon
Through Sun and rain, your rainbow in December or June
I am round and I am happy and reflect on your sunny side
I am your Bayeux Tapestry, your town centre pride

I am your war memorials garden and if I say it myself,
In a roundabout way, I am your Town Centre Treasure,
So please don't throw me away.

Our Roundabout Hypocrisy- Roger Warrilow

We have our master plan
And you will obey,
If you did
That would be bordering on democracy
We have our master plan
So forget your referendum
Forget the march of one thousand
It might as well have been just one
Now that we have you
On the run
Just lie down until the job is done

We have our master plan
We might have said that there would be a consultation
But you’re only Leek’s population
Not the whole of England’s nation
You did pay for it
But it’s locked in a secret location
No you cannot see that it might cause consternation
You might as well ask
But we have the power.
We have our master plan
You have no chance whoever you are
The Staffordshire Moorlands Leek Councillors
Voted two to one against you at
Our one or only chance
You can win but the chance is slim
Ring your MP Karen Bradley
Everyday of every week
Also ring your Council Leader
Sybil Ralphs, she will let you speak
Do not lie down and forget your town
Speak to the above and do all you can
The head of the street must have its crown
The roundabout must stay
So ring now and pray for a better day.

More lights means more gridlock- Frank Bradbury

Councillor Hart thinks that the removal of the roundabout is the only way to prevent gridlock. The way I see it putting in more lights only increases gridlock.

I have travelled in and out of Leek for many years and when the town is busy then its bumper to bumper
Be cautious- spare a thought for the driver- the idea has never been tried and never will be with the present group of back room Councillor of the ” I’m it and you are nothing” approach.

I think removing lights  and imposing a 5 mph speed limit will improve the traffic flow in Leek.

I have read of the removal of traffic lights has lead to a reduction of accidents and more cautious driving
Let’s forget about the doctor’s opinion, the dinosaur thoughts and Cllr Harts friends and give it a try

. Leave a space and slow down. The idea could be hear to stay

Row grows over roundabout

According to the Post and Times today with the report that conservation groups have been over looked in discussing the plans. It follows other reports that English Heritage were not consulted either despite the fact that two listed buildings are included in the plans.

Tony Busfield  member of the Leek Conservation Panel said that the views of the panel should have been discussed.

The road plans which arise out of the Sainsbury development of the former Churnet Works in Macclesfield Rd. They involve a crossing and traffic lights in St Edward Church in Church St and in front of the Nicholson War Memorial and the removal of the roundabout

A petition comprising of 8,000 names against the changes is hoped to be presented to parliament in the near future.

Meanwhile a meeting of councillors held behind closed doors will discuss forthcoming consultations on the design of the road layout. A group of 12 individuals drawn from Councillors, civic representative  and Sainsbury officers.

Some fear that that areas of the town will be congested

A leading Conservative Councillor Norma Hawkins fumed at the lck of information and the secrecy. She also complained that the involvement of unelected people was wrong. She was angered by the process.
Other Councillors expressed great dismay at the impact on the local lay out

Mistake should not be repeated- Brian Pointon

I do not after driving through Biddulph see waht Cllr Hart is talking about when he mentioned jobs being created by Sainsbury's.

Most of the jobs will be part time- not a good thing when bills have to be paid.

Mr Hart comes from Biddulph and he must see what it has done to the town, most shops closed and many jobs lost and those that are open have seen a decline in their business.

Get them to walk around Leek and look at the type of shop we have- they only cater for the few or stand empty.

The market is getting less and less judging by the row of stalls missing. Surley the council can learn form this mistake.

Also I have taken the trouble to watch the traffic going around and around the roundabout for a number of days and I don't see what the problem is.

Representatives cannot ignore us- Michael Stapleton

It would appear that the proposal to remove the roundabout is linked with the idea of improving traffic flow when large delivery vehicles wish to access the new Sainsbury store on Macclesfield Rd. I am sure that there are other reasons adduced, but this appears to be the main one.

Access would have to be one of the five arterial roads which serve Leek. From the north, the access  would be from the Buxton Rd (A53) through Stockwell St and Mills St. From the south east  Asbourne Rd (A523) access would be via Springfield Rd, then Stockwell St and Mill St. From the north west Macclesfield Rd access would be straight to the store. From the south Cheddleton Rd (A520 ) access would be via St Edward St and Mill St. From the South West (Hanley A53)  access would be via  St Edward St and Mill St.

Not one of these routes impinges on the roundabout, so why do SMDC and Staffordshire County Council consider this important part of the heritage of the town should be removed? I do not have the impression that Sainsbury's are pressing for the changes and I feel that the 106 agreement money could be spent in far better ways.

The final decision will rest with local councillors and we must hope that our representatives will listen to the over 1,000 residents who wish to retain the roundabout.

Modern Life -Councils and developers

One issue that puzzles me over the Leek Roundabout issue is the craven way in which local Authorities seem to respond to the wishes of corporate business. Why do they cave in so? I have been following the issue as a comparative newcomer to Leek. It seems to me that local people take a great deal of pride in the roundabout and the heritage of the town. Why are the local council so stubborn on a matter of so little consequence?
